July 7, 2007–I’ll never forget the day because for weeks the media had been talking about how it was supposed to be such a lucky day because of the triple 7′s.

I was visiting my parents in Myrtle Beach when I got a call from my sister. She’d gone by to check on my house and when she opened the front door, it was raining through the ceiling from the second floor.

Turns out, a tiny piece of rubber had sprung off a tube inside a second floor toilet and unleashed a stream of water for four straight days. And the house was a disaster.

During the three months of demolition and restoration, I’d hole up with the dogs in my bedroom and try to work amid the supersonic fans, banging, whirring and even singing (one of the painters seemed to think he was a Spanish Pavarotti)…when I wasn’t dealing with the claims adjuster, contractor or mile-long list of decisions that had to be made .

As you can guess, it was a little hard to concentrate on my business.
